The Excellence And Acts Of Worship (A’maal) For The Month Of Shabaan

THE EXCELLENCE AND ACTS OF WORSHIP (A’MAAL) FOR THE MONTH OF SHABAAN & 1st Shaban -Extract from Mafatih-ul-Jinan

Shabaan is a month of high excellence and is dedicated to the Leader of the Prophets (saaw). He used to keep fasts during this month and join it with the month of Ramadhan. He used to say, “Sha’baan is a month dedicated to me. Whoever keeps one fast during my month will definitely go to heaven”.

It has been reported from Imam Ja’far Sadiq (as) that on the commencement of this month, Imam Zainul Abideen (as) would gather his companions and address them, “O my companions, do you know which month this is? It is the month of Shabaan about which the Holy Messenger (saaw) used to say that it is dedicated to him. So keep fasts during this month in the love of your Holy Prophet (saaw) and to attain closeness to your Creator. By Allah in whose hands is my soul, I have heard from my father, Hussein ibn Ali (as), that he had heard from Commander of Faithful (as), that whoever keeps fast during Sha’baan in the love of the Holy Prophet (saw) and to attain closeness to Allah will become a friend to Allah and on the Day of Judgment will be close to Allah by His grace and Paradise will be assured to him.”

Sheikh Tusi has reported from Safwane Jammal that Imam Ja’far Sadiq (as) asked him to encourage his neighbours and friends to fast in the month of Sha’baan. He asked the Imam if there was any special significance for it, and he replied that when the month commenced, the Holy Messenger (saw) would command his announcer to proclaim in Medina that the Holy Messenger (saaw) wished them to be aware that Sha’baan was a month dedicated to him and Allah bestows mercy on whosoever associates with him in this month by fasting. Imam Ja’far Sadiq (as) proceeded to report from Commander of Faithful (as) that since hearing the announcement, he never missed any fast during the month of Sha’baan and, Allah willing, hoped not to miss any during the remainder of his life. He added that fasting in the months of Sha’baan and Ramadhan is a means of repentance and pardon from Allah.

Keeping fast on Thursdays of the month also carried great significance. It has been reported that the heavens are decorated each Thursday in the month of Sha’baan and the angles pray to Allah to forgive all those who fast on that day and their prayers are accepted. It is stated in the reports of the narrations of the Holy prophet (saaw) that whoever fasts on Mondays and Thursdays of this month, Allah will fulfill twenty of his worldly wishes and twenty of his wishes of the Hereafter.

It is recommended to give alms in this month even if it is as small as a half date. Almsgiving in this month brings about rescue from Hellfire. In this respect, it has been narrated that when Imam al-Sadiq (a.s) was asked about the merits of observing fasting in Rajab, he answered, “Why do you not ask about the merits of observing fasting in Shaban.” “What is then the reward of him who observes fasting on one day in Shaban, Son of Allah’s Messenger?” asked the narrator. The Imam (a.s) answered, “The reward will be Paradise. I swear it by Allah.” The narrator then asked again, “What are the best deeds that should be done in Shaban.” The Imam (a.s) answered, “Almsgiving and seeking forgiveness are the best deeds in Shab¡n. Verily, if anyone of you gives alms in Sha`ban, Almighty Allah will breed that alms in the very same way as you breed your small camels. Hence, this alms will be as huge as Mount Uhud on the Resurrection Day.”

THE FIRST EVE:

Numerous prayers have been reported in “IQBAL” including twelve rakaats with the recitation of the Chapter on Ikhlas eleven times after the recitation of the Chapter on Al-Hamd.

It is a day of great excellence and it has been reported from Ja’far Sadiq (as) that whoever fasts on that day is assured of Heaven. Seyyid ibn Tawoos has reported from the Holy Messenger (saw) that a person who fasts on the first three days of this month and on their eve recites two rakaats in each of which he recites after the Chapter on Al-Hamd, the Chapter on Ikhlas eleven times will be greatly rewarded.

In the commentary of the Eleventh Imam (as) great excellence has been reported from the month of Sha’baan and its first day and its many benefits. Thiqatul Islam Noori (May Allah brighten his grave) has translated the reported at the end of this work “KALEM-E-TAYYIB” but as the report is too long to be included here fully, a summary of it is set out:

On a first of Sha’baan Commander of Faithful (as) passed by a group of a people who were seated in a mosque discussing the subject of destiny. Their voices were raised as the arguments were heated and the contentions severe. Commander of Faithful (as) stopped and greeted them. They replied, rose in deference to him and requested him to join them. Without heeding their request, he addressed them, “O people, do not indulge in discussions not beneficial to you. Are you not aware that there are creatures of Allah who, though not dumb or incapacitated, are dumbfounded out of his fear? Whenever they think of the greatness of Allah, their tongues become tied and their hearts feeble, they lose their senses and become confounded by His glory, majesty and magnificence. When they recover from this state, they revert to Allah regarding themselves sinful, though they are distant from sin and error. They are not content with their ordinary labours of Allah nor do they regard their enormous deeds as plentiful, and constantly engage themselves in efforts for the pleasure of Allah. Whenever you see them in prayer, you will notice them fearful and anxious. How do you compare with them, you the beginners? Are you not aware that the wisest of men are the most quiet and the most ignorant are the most vocal? O fresh people, today is the first of the honoured Sha’baan. Allah has so named it as the good things (khayraat) are disbursed in this month.

Allah keeps open in this month the gates of His benefaction and has made available for you His palaces and benediction for little virtue from you. So purchase them. But the cursed devil (Iblis) has embellished for you his vices and evil and you have always wandered astray and towards rebellion associating with evil and turning away from virtue of which He has opened the gates for you. This is the first of Sha’baan and the branches of its benediction are prayers, fasting, charity, admonishing towards virtue and restraining from evil, honoring the parents, relatives and neighbors, settlement of disputes and charity to the needy and poor. However, you have imposed on yourselves the load you cannot carry of discussing destiny. Enquiry into matters that are in the hands of Allah is not permissible to everybody, for it can lead to being misguided. Beware, if you knew what Allah has in store for the obedient, you would not have been indulging in such discussions but would have been engrossed in the matters prescribed for today.

“They asked, “O Commander of Faithful, what are the things Allah has kept in store this day for the obedient?” he narrated to them the episode of the army the Holy Messenger (saaw) had sent to fight the infidels. It was a dark night and when the infidels planned a night attach, the Muslims were all asleep except for Zaid bin Harith, Abdullah bin Rawaha, Qatadah bin No’man and Qays bin Asim Munqari. Each of them was engrossed in prayers and in recitation of the Holy Qur’an. The enemies shot arrows aimed at the Muslims. As it was pitch dark, the enemies could not see the Muslims to be frightened of its size and got so close to them that they were soon to destroy the Muslims. Suddenly such light beamed from the faces of these few individuals that the whole Muslim army became illuminated. This inspired the Muslims who unsheathed their swords and attacked the infidels killing them or wounding them and taking them prisoners. When they turned to the Holy Messenger (saw) and narrated their encounter to him, he said that the prayers of the their brothers on the first eve of Sha’baan was the cause of the light which illuminated from their faces.

Iblis spreads out his army round the earth urging them to make special efforts to attract the creatures of Allah towards them as Allah spreads His angels on this day round the world commanding them to look after His creatures well and urge them towards virtue and stating that because of them, the creatures will turn to virtue except for the disobedient and rebellious who would have united with the army of Iblis. On the first of Sha’baan Allah surely orders the Gates of Heaven to open up and the “Tree of Tooba” to bring its branches closer to earth and at that time there is an announcement from Allah, “O creature of Allah, these are the branches of the “Tree of Tooba”, cling to them as they will lift you to Heaven and these are the branches of the “Tree of Zaqoom”, beware of them lest they lead you to Hell”. The Holy Messenger (saaw) said, “By the one who has appointed me to the Prophet hood, whoever adopts any virtue on this day will have clung to a branch of the branches of the “Tree of Tooba” which will take him to heaven and whoever adopts evil on this day will surely have clung to a branch of the branches of the “Tree of Zaqoom” which will take him to fire.

“Tree of Tooba” & “Tree of Zaqoom”,

Whoever will recite optional prayers on the first of Sha’baan for the pleasure of Allah will have clung to one of its branches, whoever will keep fast on this day will surely have clung to one of its branches, whoever will reconcile between husband and wife or father and son or among relatives or neighbours or other people will surely have clung to one of the branches, whoever helps one in debt or reduces it has clung to one of the branches, whoever checks his accounts and discovers a debt due to him of which the lender has lost hope of repayment and he settles the debt, he will surely have clung to one of the branches, whoever stands surety for an orphan will surely have clung to one of the branches, whoever protects the dignity of a believer from the foolish has surely clung to one of the branches, whoever recites the Holy Qur’an or a portion of it has surely clung to one of the branches, whoever remembers Allah and counts His blessings and expresses his gratitude has surely clung to one of the branches, whoever visits a sick person has surely clung to one of the branches, whoever acts virtuously towards his parents or one of them has surely clung to one of the branches, whoever on this day pleases someone he had angered in the past has also surely clung to one of the branches, whoever joins in a funeral has surely clung to one of the branches, whoever on this day comforts a distressed person has surely clung to one of the branches and, likewise whoever does any good on this day has surely clung to one of the branches.

The Holy Messenger (saaw) said, “By the one who has appointed me to Prophet hood, whoever on this day indulges in the evil or sin will have surely clung to one of the branches of the “Tree of Zaqoom” which will pull him to the fire of Hell. By the one who has sent me as a Messenger, whoever becomes negligent with his obligatory prayers on this day will surely have clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever is approached by a weak or poor person of whose condition he is aware and is able to assist him without any harm to himself, and there is none other than him to help the poor, yet leaves him to collapse without holding his hand, then surely he has clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever, on receiving an apology from one who had wronged him, exacts from him punishment in excess of what is just for the wrong then surely he has clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever causes separation between husband and wife or parent and children or between brothers or brothers and sisters or relatives or neighbours or two friends or two sisters, he has surely clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever is aware of the hardship of a person, yet becomes hard on him and worsens his plight by anger, has surely also clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever is indebted but denies the debt and endeavors to invalidate it, has surely clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever molests an orphan, causes him trouble or destroys his property has clung to one of the branches of that tree.

Whoever transgresses on the reputation of a brother believer and causes people to dislike him, then has surely clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever sings in such a manner that people indulge in sins, has surely clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever sits and narrates his evil deeds and oppression during a war and takes pride in them, has surely clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever has a sick neighbour but does not visit him as he regards him lower than himself has clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever fails to join in the funeral of a neighbour only because he regarded him base, has surely clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever turns away from a distressed person and regarding him base oppresses him has surely clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever has been disowned (disinherited) by his parents or either of them, has also clung to one of the branches of that tree. Whoever has been disowned (disinherited) by his parents and despite being able to please them does not do so on this day, then he surely has clung to one of the branches of that tree and, likewise, whoever does any form of evil has surely clung to one of the branches of the “Tree of Zaqoom”.

By the one who has sent me as a Messenger, the branches of the “Tree of Tooba” will elevate those who have clung to them towards Heaven.” At that time the Holy Messenger (saaw) raised his eyes for a few moments towards the sky and looked pleased and then lowered his sight to the earth but looked displeased and turning to his companions said, “By the one who has sent Muhammad as a Prophet, I have surely seen the “Tree of Tooba” raise itself and raise all those who had clung to it towards Heaven and saw some of those who had clung to one or more of its branches, according to the degree of their obedience. I surely saw Zayd bin Harith clinging to a number of the branches and the branches were elevating him to the highest place in Heaven. So I became pleased. Then I lowered my sight to the earth. By the one who has sent me as a Messenger, I then saw the “Tree of Zaqoom”. Its branches were lowering themselves towards Hell and all those who had clung to one or more of its branches as a result of their ill deeds. I surely saw some of the hypocrites clinging to a number of the branches which were carrying them to the lowest abyss in a hell. So I became displeased.”

Regular A’amal -Month Of Sha’baan

The Holy Prophet said: “Shaa’-baan is my month”.

Imam Ali bin Husayn Al Zanul Aabideen (A.S.) told his companions: “The Holy Prophet (S.A.) used to observe fast during the whole month of Shaa’-baan. Therefore whosoever, in love of the Holy Prophet (S.A.), wishes to seek nearness to Allah and receive bounties, favours and rewards in this world and in the Hereafter, must connect Shaa’-baan with Ramazaan (in the matter of fasting and special prayers).

1) It is highly desirable to observe fast on 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sha’baan, & Pray every night a 2 Rak-a’t Namaaz. In every Rak-a’t, after the recitation of Soorah Al Faatih’ah, recite Soorah Al Ikhlaas 11 times..

2) Give Alms/Charity in HIS name “What are the best deeds that should be done in Shabaan.” The Imam (a.s) answered, “Almsgiving and seeking forgiveness are the best deeds in Shabaan. Verily, if anyone of you gives alms in Shabaan, Almighty Allah will breed that alms in the very same way as you breed your small camels. Hence, this alms will be as huge as Mount Uhud on the Resurrection Day.”

Recite 70 times:–

I seek forgiveness of Allah, and, repentant, beseech Him.

ASTAGFIRULLAAHA WA AS-ALUHUT TAWBAH

I seek forgiveness of Allah who is “There is no God save He”, the Beneficent, the Merciful; the Ever living, the Eternal, and I turn repentant to Him

ASTAGHFIRULLAAHALLAD’EE LAA ILAAHA ILLA HUWAR RAHMANO RAH’EEMUL H’AYYUL QAYYOOMU WA ATOOBU ILAYHI

According to narrations, the best supplications and invocations that are advisably recited in Shaban are the prayers of seeking forgiveness of Almighty Allah (i.e. istighfar). Hence, to seek Almighty Allah’s forgiveness seventy times a day in Shaban is equal to seeking His forgiveness seventy Thousand times a day in the other months

4) Recite the following 1000 times, whenever the count reaches 1000, at any time within the month, the a’maal is complete:
There is no god save Allah. We do not worship save “He” alone, making religion pure for Him (only), however much the disbelievers be averse.

LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAAHU WA LAA NAA’-BUDU ILLAA IYYAAHU MUKHLIS’EENA LAHUD DEEN WA LAW KARIHAL MUSHRIKOON

5) On every Thursday Fasting is recommended & Recite 2 Rak-a’t Namaaz. In every Rak-a’t, after the recitation of Soorah Al Faatih’ah, recite Soorah Al Ikhlaas 100 times. After the Salaam recite Salawaat 100 times .اللّهُمَّصَلِّعَلَىمُحَمَّدٍوَآلِمُحَمَّدٍ In this respect, a Hadith reads that the heavens decorate themselves each Thursday in Shaban and the angels pray Almighty Allah, saying, “O our God: (please do) forgive him who observe fasting on this day and respond to his prayers.”

O Allah: (please do) send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad—the pure, the pious, the righteous whose rights have been made incumbent upon us by You and the obedience to whom has been deemed obligatory upon us by You and whose (divinely commissioned) leadership has been (also) deemed obligatory upon us by You.

Allah! Bless Mohammad and his progeny and embellish my heart with obedience to You and disgrace me not with disobedience to You and bless me with tenderness for one struck with poverty from Your sustenance for You have blessed me with affluence in livelihood and because You have displayed Your justice on me and bestowed life on me to live under Your shade.

And this is the month You have attributed to Your Prophet the chief of Your Prophets month of Shaaban You have encompassed it with your mercy and pleasure.

The Messenger of god used to keep vigil in devotion during its nights and observed fasts during its days humiliating himself before You honouring and respecting it till his departure from this World.

Allah! Help us in following his life pattern and in achieving his intercession.O Allah! Appoint him as an intercessor for me and his intercession is accepted by You and appoint him to show us a simple path towards You and make me his follower till I meet You on the day of resurrection in a state that You be pleased with me ignoring my sins for You have prescribed mercy and pleasure from you and my entertainment a peaceful abode and the abode of virtuous people:

‘Lailatul Raghaib’ (Night of Desires)

First Thursday in Rajab called ‘Laylat al-Ragha’ib (Night of Desires).

This rite is a special prayer to be offered on this night. As is mentioned by Sayyid Ibn Tawus in his book of ‘Iqbal al-Amal’ andAllamah al-Majlisiy in ‘Ijazat Bani-Zuhrah,’ the reward of him who offers this prayer is that a great number of his sins are forgiven and that on the first night in the grave, Almighty Allah sends him the reward of this prayer in the form of a life form with happy mien and fluency to say to him, “Good tidings, You have escaped all hardships.” The offerer of this prayer will then ask him about his character, saying, “Who are you? Indeed, I have never seen such good looking face, and I have never heard such fluent words, and I have never smelled such nice scent.” He will be answered, “I am the reward of the prayer that you offered at so-and-so night in so-and-so month in so-and-so year at the town of so-and-so. I am here now so as to settle your right, to entertain you in your loneliness, and to save you from this cheerless situation. When the Trumpet shall be blown (declaring the Resurrection Day), I will cast a shadow over your head in the Resurrection Court. So, be happy, for you shall never be deprived of goodness.”

The Holy Prophet (s.a) has said, that these prayers are Means of forgiveness and On the first night in our grave,, the Almighty will send the reward off this prayer in the best,, enlightened and eloquent form.. When inquired,, will reply,, ‘‘My Beloved,, glad tidings to you that you have found salvation from every hardship and horror..’’When asked,, ‘‘Who are you?’’ ‘‘By God I haven’t seen any one more beautiful than you,, I haven’t heard a word sweeter than yours,, or a fragrance better than you?’’ In reply,, ‘‘I am,, that prayer which you offered on the eve off the first Friday of the month of Rajab. I have come to you,, to be your companion in this loneliness,, to remove from you your fright and horror.. Be lest assured that my shelter will be with you until the blowing off the Horn off the Day off Judgment..’’

One should observe fast on the first Thursday in Rajab.

Between the Maghrib (sunset) and Isha' (evening) Prayers, one should offer a twelve Rakah prayer each couple of which is separated by Taslim (i.e. the concluding part of a prayer). In each Rak`ah, one should recite the Surah of al-Fatihah once, the Surah of al-Qadr three times, and the Surah of al-Taweed twelve times.

After accomplishing the prayer, one should recite the following invocation seventy times:

Recite 70 times:

Preparation For Laylatul Qadr

One of the most important dua to ask throughout the month of Ramadhan is to ask to be able to utilise the opportunity given during Laylatul Qadr to get divine grace. In Suratul Qadr, Allah considers the night to be better than a thousand months (approx 80 years). To be able to gain 80 years worth of grace is an awesome achievement.

It is recommended to recite Suratud Dukhan and Suratul Qadr every day from the beginning of the month until the 23rd of the month in preparation of Laylatul Qadr.

From ahadith we know that the affairs for every year, i.e., sustenance, provisions, age…. are assigned during Laylatul Qadr. Therefore to ponder and think of one’s aspirations and goals is the most important of preparations for the night.

Hadith from Hadith Qudsi

Prophet Musa (pbuh) once addressed Allah saying: “Lord! I desire to be near to You.”

Allah said “Whoever desires nearness to Me is one who remains awake during Laylatul Qadr (doing ibada).”

Prophet Musa (pbuh) said: “Lord! I wish to earn Your mercy.”

Allah replied “My mercy is granted to anyone who is merciful to the underprivileged during Laylatul Qadr.”

Prophet Musa (pbuh) said: “Lord! I wish to pass on the right path.”

Allah replied “This is granted to anyone who gives sadaqa during Laylatul Qadr.”

Prophet Musa (pbuh) said: “Lord! I wish to enjoy the trees and fruits of Janna!”

Allah replied “This is granted to anyone who praises Me during Laylatul Qadr.”

Prophet Musa (pbuh) said: “Lord! I wish to achieve salvation from the fire!”

Allah replied “This is granted to anyone who seeks forgiveness during Laylatul Qadr.”

Prophet Musa (pbuh) said: “Lord! I wish to achieve Your pleasure!”

Allah replied “I shall be pleased with anyone who prays two (mustahab) rak’ats salaa during Laylatul Qadr.”

Laylatul Qadr

“Allah has favoured Friday over all other days, the month of Ramadhan over all other months, and Laylatul Qadr over all other nights.” Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

This name was used for Laylatul Qadr because Allah determines what will happen for everyone in the entire next year. The “Qadr” in this sense means destiny. According to Al Qummi’s Tafsir, as explained on p. 432 of its second volume, such destiny includes life and death, sustenance, abundance of crops or famine and everything good or bad. This means that Allah determines in this night each and every event to occur during the next year to any and all of His creation.

Sulayman al- Marzawi asked Imam Ali Ar Ridha (pbuh) “Could you please tell us why Suratul Qadr was revealed?”

Imam replied: “O Sulayman! Laylatul Qadr is the night when Allah decrees what will take place from one year to another of life or death, good or evil, regarding sustenance and whatever He then decrees is sure destiny.”

“Whoever spends Laylatul Qadr in ibada to his/her Rabb will have all his/her sins forgiven even if they had numbered as many as the stars in the heavens, the weight of the mountains, or the measures of the seas.” Imam Muhammad Al Baqir (pbuh)

“The Holy Qur’an was revealed as a whole during the month of Ramadan at the Ancient House (the Ka’ba), then from there it was revealed along the span of (more than) twenty years.” Imam Sadiq (pbuh)

“The Books of Ibrahim (pbuh) were revealed on the first night of the month of Ramadan; the Torah was revealed on the sixth of the month of Ramadan; the Gospel (Injil) was revealed on the thirteenth of the month of Ramadan; the Psalms (Zabur) were revealed on the eighteenth of the month of Ramadan, and the Holy Qur’an was revealed on the twenty-fourth of the month of Ramadan.” Imam Sadiq (pbuh)

“During Laylatul Qadr, the angels, the spirit, and the trusted scribes all descend to the lower heavens and write down whatever Allah decrees that year, and if Allah wishes to advance something or postpone it or add thereto, He orders the angel to erase it and replace it with whatever He decrees.” Imam Sadiq (pbuh)

Ibn Abbas is quoted saying, “The Holy Qur’an was revealed as a whole from the Safeguarded Scroll from the heavens to the lower earth on Laylatul Qadr, then Jibrail used to reveal it unto Rasulullah (pbuh) gradually.”

Imam Baqir (pbuh), quoting Rasulullah (pbuh) has said that whoever spends Laylatul Qadr adoring his Lord will have all his sins forgiven even if they had numbered as many as the stars in the heavens, the weight of the mountains, or the measures of the seas.

Imam Baqir (pbuh) has said, “The 17th night of the month of Ramadan is when the two parties met, and the 19th is when the lists of the pilgrims is written down, and the 21st is when the successor to the Prophet passed away and Isa (pbuh) was raised to heaven and Musa (pbuh) passed away, whereas the 23rd is hoped to be Laylatul-Qadr.”

Ahmed ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya quotes his father saying, “I was in the company of Imam Sadiq (pbuh) when Abu Baseer asked him, ‘Which night is the one when one is to plead to his Lord whatever he wishes to plead?’ Imam answered him by saying, ‘Either the twenty-first or the twenty-third.’ He then asked him: ‘What if I have no strength to observe both of them?’

Imam said, ‘How easy it is to observe them when compared to your pleas!”’

Imam Sadiq (pbuh) has also said: “The twenty-third night of the month of Ramadan is the one when every weighty matter is decided, when trials, tribulations, deaths, and means of sustenance and other matters are determined, and so will whatever Allah decrees to take place for the entire next year; so, congratulations to anyone who remains awake during it bowing, prostrating, contemplating upon his sins, weeping on their account, for if you do all of that, God willing, you Will never be disappointed.”

Then he added, “Allah will order an angel to call out during each and every day of the month of Ramadan conveying Allah’s message to them thus: ‘ Good news, O My servants, I have forgiven your past sins and permitted some of you to intercede on behalf of the rest on Lailatul-Qadr except those who break their fast with an intoxicant or those who bear grudge against another Muslim brother!’”

It is narrated that Allah wards off evil and sins and all types of trials on the 25th night from all His servants who fast and grants them light in their hearing and vision; Janna is decorated during Laylatul Qadr’s day and night.

Suggested things to do on Laylatul Qadr

Physically

· Make sure you are comfortable.

· Don’t eat too much for you will feel sleepy.

· Give sadaqa

Mentally

· Concentrate on Allah today by focusing your thoughts on the importance of this night and how it is the unfortunate who are devoid of the blessings of this night. To keep your thoughts focused everytime they stray recite “Innaa lillahi wa innaa ilayhi raaji’un” “Indeed we are from Allah and towards Him is our return.” 2:156

Emotionally

· Make sure you are at peace with your relations especially your parents and blood ties. Ask their forgiveness for any wrong doing or hurt you may have caused them.

· Forgive those who have hurt you. Release yourself from their prison. Remember ‘The reward for goodness is only good”.

Spiritually

· Ponder over the translation of the duas so you can ‘connect’

· When reciting the names of the Ma’sumeen think about each of them, ‘connecting’ to them.

· Imagine yourself at the day of Judgement – cry and beseech Him for forgiveness and a fresh start. The Prophet (SAW) when asked what one should ask Allah for during these nights, said “Ask for your safety (here and in the hereafter)”.

DIVIDE THE NIGHT INTO 3 PARTS

1. The first part to gain knowledge. Listen to some lectures or read and make notes. Maybe the understanding of the suwer of ‘Ankabut and Room for Imam Ja’fer As Sadiq (AS) has told Abu Baseer that whoever reads these suwer on the 23rd night of the month of Ramadhan will certainly be among the residents of Janna without any exception, adding, “… and I do not fear that Allah will record a sin against me for giving such a status for these two suwer”

2. The 2nd part to be allocated for meditation. Ask yourself questions – Who am I? What do I wish to be? Where do I wish to go? How will I get there? Find time to talk to your Rabb and tell Him your insecurities, fears, aspirations……….. Ask the help of the Ma’sumeen to intercede (tawassul) and help……..Recite the duas/munajat from Saheefa Sajjadiyya to help focus.

3. The 3rd part to be allocated for Salatul Layl to connect with Salatul Fajr.

THE NIGHT OF POWER: A NIGHT BETTER THAN A THOUSAND MONTHS-1

Alhamdulillah, by the grace of the Almighty we once again have the chance to get our destinies written as it’s a night/nights where we can pray for the forthcoming year. But as all programmes need preparation, these nights need preparation too.

(from lectures given by Raziyabai Janmohammed & Nasreenbai Tejani in tadabbur classes and Sheikh Alidina’s lectures in the mosque).

PREPARATION:

When should you start preparing??

~Just after Maahe Ramadhan (for next year, inshallah)

We start by first asking ALLAH (SWT) to help us to worship Him (lots of “other” things are being worshipped today).

~Do all the “preparations” earlier so as not to regret later.

~Jibraeel was asked how were a momin’s wishes be fulfilled in this night? He replied that his halal wishes are fulfilled, his maghfirah getting accepted, but for those who “drink”, do “qat-e-rehmi” and those who do “fitna and fasaad”.

~A suitable state:

1. manzil (keeping in mind the great night)

2. maksad (get all the benefits of it – The guests of Allah-believers- get invitation to a DASTARKHAAN/table-laid full of ne’amats as gifts – but all depends on how we take it (rooh’s feast to get the best).

~ Hadith says do duas to beforehand to be able to stay alive for this night and also that we get tawfeek to grab these ne’amats and do istighfaar. We should be able to select good things and get closer to Allah s.w.t.– we should be eager to get them, and not just do the amals as rituals and also to make our Imame wakt happy).

~Be mentally prepared. Keep Allah s.w.t in front of you; our mind should be in amals; remove all bad thoughts by reciting constantly before amal nights: INNA LILLAAHI WA INNA ILAYIH RAAJIUN – so our duas should not be thrown back- have KHUSHU and KHUZU.

~Strive to do as much as you can even if you feel you can’t or don’t feel like doing.

~Get a proper place, preferably a masjid and comfortable clothes, for proper concentration (on the 23rd night we see pacheris going up and down).

~Give sadqa.

~Get all the meanings to understand what is recited (alhamdulillah- the media room in providing that).

~Do everything with ma-arifa (like why we do this amal and why we recite that dua).

~Wait earnestly for this night to get your duas accepted

~This night should be divided into three parts, namely for ilm (gaining knowledge), meditation and salaah.

~To take full advantage, 6th Imam said, do ghusl twice, first part of the night, just before sunset and later part (ghusl is for the removal of the dirt gathered in our souls – ‘cleanliness is half imaan’). So with Jihad-e-nafs remove all inside impurity.

~ The Hole Prophet was asked, “ Which is the best dua to be recited in these nights?” He replied, “That dua which gives you Duniya and Akhiraah najaat/success”.

A NIGHT BETTER THAN A THOUSAND MONTHS………2

PREPARATION:

~ After the ghusl (of before maghrib), pray namaze maghribayn. Then pray 2 rakat prayer with 7 times sura e tawheed after sura e alhamd (this is to assure oursleves of how we are in need of our Lord).

~ 70 times astaghfaar (think of your 70 different sins or 10 sins each of 7 organs, like mouth, eyes, hands, etc, or even think about the ‘manzar’/state of qayamat – the Holy Prophet said thinking about all this with sure intention of not committing again, will make your istighfaar be accepted).

~LA’ANAH: this is a dua too, but when we send la’anah to the oppressors, we have to be careful that we are not in that category, if not directly, undirectly!! Keeping in mind the present oppressors, pray earnestly for the return of our Imam to end the oppression.

~As told by Agha Mirza, try to cry with repentence; keep your hands behind the neck, or keep sand/mud on your head, or remember your grave. Keep your head rubbing on the wall; stand a bit, sit a bit and think of hell’s manzar/state.

~Do the amaal of the Holy Quran – shafa’at from Quran and Ahlulbayt- we need masumeen for our shafa’at!!

~DUA: for hajj, for hujjah – The Proof (Imame Zamana – on whom the angels are descending with our amaals), for others first specially the oppressed around the world and those suffering from diseases as well as from natural and man-made disasters, for best life, for ilm, for the life hereafter, akhiraah, barzakh, etc.

~Recite Ziyarate waaritha (all prophets come down to our Imam; our amaals going to Imam, he being the ‘waarith’ of all the prophets’ ilm and struggle – so many lessons in this ziyarah).

~Ask Imame Zamana for shafa’at and maghfirah, and very humbly to take ALL OUR AMAALS AND DUAS to Alllah s.w.t.

~ Even the days following are auspicious and important; use them to perform good deeds and reciting other duas.

OUR DESTINY IS IN OUR HANDS; SO LETS THINK BEFORE WASTING AWAY THESE NIGHTS AND ASK ALLAH TO GRANT US THE TAWFEEK TO PERFORM THE AAMAALS WITH MA’ARIFA/UNDERSTANDING, AAMEEN.

The reward as mentioned above is given as soon as one lifts his/her head from the last sajdah.

The a’amaal has the following benefits, if done on any one day in Holy Ramadhan.

Sawab of seven hundred thousand for going to Hajj.

Sawab of seven hundred thousand for going to Umra.

Regular A’amal -SHA’-BAAN

2) Give Alms/Charity in HIS name “What are the best deeds that should be done in Sha`ban.” The Imam (a.s) answered, “Almsgiving and seeking forgiveness are the best deeds in Sha`ban. Verily, if anyone of you gives alms in Sha`ban, Almighty Allah will breed that alms in the very same way as you breed your small camels. Hence, this alms will be as huge as Mount Uhud on the Resurrection Day.” (use www.Eternal-Investment.org )

3) Recite 70 times:-
I seek forgiveness of Allah, and, repentant, beseech Him.

da-amal

ASTAGFIRULLAAHA WA AS-ALUHUT TAWBAH

I seek forgiveness of Allah who is “There is no God save He”, the Beneficent, the Merciful; the Ever living, the Eternal, and I turn repentant to Him

da-amal1

ASTAGHFIRULLAAHALLAD’EE LAA ILAAHA ILLA HUWAR RAHMANO RAH’EEMUL H’AYYUL QAYYOOMU WA ATOOBU ILAYHI

According to narrations, the best supplications and invocations that are advisably recited in Sha`ban are the prayers of seeking forgiveness of Almighty Allah (i.e. istighfar). Hence, to seek Almighty Allah’s forgiveness seventy times a day in Sha`ban is equal to seeking His forgiveness seventy Thousand times a day in the other months

4) Recite the following 1000 times, whenever the count reaches 1000, at any time within the month, the a’mal is complete:

There is no god save Allah. We do not worship save “He” alone, making religion pure for Him (only), however much the disbelievers be averse.

da-amal2

LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAAHU WA LAA NAA’-BUDU ILLAA IYYAAHU MUKHLIS’EENA LAHUD DEEN WA LAW KARIHAL MUSHRIKOON

5) On every Thursday Fasting is recommended & Recite 2 Rak-a’t Namaaz. In every Rak-a’t, after the recitation of Soorah Al Faatih’ah, recite Soorah Al Ikhlaas 100 times. After the Salaam recite Salawaat 100 times . اللّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ In this respect, a Hadith reads that the heavens decorate themselves each Thursday in Sha`ban and the angels pray Almighty Allah, saying, “O our God: (please do) forgive him who observe fasting on this day and respond to his prayers.”

The Holy Prophet (a.s) is also reported as saying, “If one observe fasting each Monday and Thursday in Sha`ban, Almighty Allah will settle forty of his needs—twenty appertained to the worldly life and twenty to the Hereafter.”

6) Recite the Special Salawaat taught by Imam Ali bin Husayn Al Zaynul Aabideen (A.S.)

7) Recite Munajat e Shabaniyah with presence of heart.

January 21

Salaat & Aamaal for the 1st of Rabbiul Awwal

General Rites of the Months

The general rites to be advisably done in each month are as follows:

First: It is recommended to say the famous supplicatory prayers at the sight of the new moon. The most preferable of these is the supplication No. 43 of Sahifae Sajjadiyyah, which has been mentioned within the rites at the beginning of Holy Ramadhan.

Second: It is recommended to recite Surah al Fateha seven times in order to escape eye ache.

Third: It is recommended to have some cheese, for it has been narrated that one who usually eats some cheese at the beginning of each month will have almost all his requests answered.

Fourth: At the first night of each month, it is recommended to offer a two unit prayer with Surah al Fateha and Surah An’aam (No. 6). One may then pray Almighty Allah to save him from any terror or pain and to make him live throughout that month peacefully and safely.

Fifth:

Salaat Ruyati Hilal – Salaat upon seeing new moon

It is desirable to pray a 2 rakat Salaat after seeing the moon of the first night of every lunar month, within 3 days & earlier the better. Also give sadaqa /charity & Inshallah you will be safe throughout the month.

This salaat is to be prayed exactly like the morning prayer, except make foll adjustments.

  1. Make Niyat of Ruyatil Hilal

  2. In first Rakat recite after Sura Fateha recite Sooratul Ikhlass 30 times

  3. In the second rakat after Sura Fateha  recite Sooratul Qadr 30 times

  4. After Salaam Recite the following :-

    Transliteration

There is not a "moving creature" in the earth but the sustenance thereof depends on Allah. He knows its habitation and its repository. All is in a manifest Book.

If Allah touch you with affliction, there is none that can relieve there from save He; and if He desires good for you, there is none who can repel His bounty. He makes it available to whom He wills of his bondmen. He is the Oft-forgiving, the Merciful.

Allah will vouchsafe, after hardship, ease. That which Allah wills (will come to pass)! There is no strength save in Allah.

Allah is sufficient for us! Most Excellent is He in whom we trust!
I confide my cause unto Allah. Verily, Allah is Seer of (His) bondmen,
There is no god save Thou. Be Thou glorified! Verily, I have been a wrongdoer, My Lord! I am needy of whatever good Thou sends down for me. My Lord! Leave me not alone (childless), though Thou art the best of inheritors.
